My Experiment of Homemade Yogurt

Ever thought about making your own yogurt?  Frankly, I wasn't really sure it was possible.  I would like to make my own cheese or press my own olive oil, too, but both of those seemed about as unrealistic for a "normal" person to attempt as yogurt.
But I found myself with some extra milk and a twinkle of inspiration.
I follow Money Saving Mom {and you should, too} and recalled she had a guest post about making your own yogurt and other ways to use up milk.
Within the post, she linked to someone using their crockpot.  I would prefer my slow cooker do all the work so I don't have to dig out the {lost} thermometer and went with her idea.

I altered my recipe from hers a little so this is what I did to achieve my results:
  1. 1/2 gallon of 1% milk {She recommended full fat but that is not what I had.}
  2. 6 oz plain Greek yogurt {as the "starter"} Again, she suggested full fat but I only found 0% Greek at Aldi's & Target so that's what I went with instead.
That's it!  Two Ingredients!  Can you believe it?
Pour the milk in the Crock Pot/Slow Cooker on low and "cook" for 2 1/2 hours.
Turn it off and let it set with the lid on for 3 hours.
Stir in the yogurt, put the lid back on, cover the whole thing with a towel {on your counter} and let it set for another 8 hours.
Yep, on your counter.
Kind of grosses you out, huh.  Yep, that's how bacteria does me, too.
This is what it is going to look like, thin & runny.  Think drinkable yogurt.  And you have to stir every time since there are no pesky chemicals keeping it coagulated.
Now it is plain, aka no flavor just tangy, so to eat it like yogurt, you might want to mix in honey, fruit or granola.
I thought this was a fun idea to utilize it, too. Another guest post on Money Saving Mom, for making your own frozen Go Gurts or Frozen Yogurt Pops, really.
What I did with the majority of it was make "Yogurt Smoothies" for my 4 & 2 year olds.  At least that is what I called it to them. I put in about 1/3 of the stirred-up yogurt, a good glug of honey and filled the rest with milk.  Shake it up and, voila, a Yogurt Smoothie.  I bought jars of fruit puree, aka baby food, to stir for Banana or Apple/Carrot Smoothies tomorrow.  They are going to love them. Really, they are.
I also used it to make my own real smoothies via a blender, frozen berries, a banana, & a good helping of the tangy yogurt.  Worked great.
Over the weekend, I made Turkey Tetrazzini  and added in about a half cup to give it a little zing.  It would be a great trade {as is} for sour cream in numerous recipes, such as Mexican dishes or Beef Stroganoff.

If the thin consistency doesn't work for you or you love the Greek yogurt texture, like I do, you can strain it like the picture below.
I used a small mesh strainer and a coffee filter over a bowl.  It was in the fridge for almost a day to get the thick texture I was after.  I was amazed at how much liquid, or whey, that came out of the small amount I put in the container.
I will have to come up with a larger way to strain more at one time but this will be good for my breakfast mixed with some fresh fruit and a little honey.
~
I hope you give this a try!  For the experimentation alone, it was worth it.  But the savings and health benefits are great bonuses, too!
Enjoy and thanks for stopping by!

Another Not-So-Boring Blog Review ~ Kashi Bars

I was chosen by Moms Meet/ Mom Ambassadors to share Kashi TLC Granola Bars with my mom friends.

I took the bars into MOPS and they were grabbed up before the meeting was over.  I did test them on my kids and hubby, as well.  The kids {almost 4, at the time, and around 20 months} didn't seem keen on the chocolate covering at the bottom.   I think it was the messiness of it.  Older children & adults would probably know to keep the wrapper for a holder to stay mess free. I personally didn't care for the flavor of the varieties they sent because, if I am going to eat chocolate, I want real chocolate.  Whatever coating used to cover the top, pales in comparison to the real thing.  But I feel that way about all of these bars, regardles of the brand.
For sharing this product with friends, they also sent us a box of cereal and the Soft Baked Strawberry Bars.

The TLC Soft Baked Ripe Strawberry bars went over much better with my kiddos and I didn't mind eating a bite to finish, if needed.
I was the one that ate most of the cereal and I liked the fact that it wasn't so sweet but still tasty with nutritional value.
If you have a blog and are looking for a program to help sample new products with your circle of moms, I recommend trying to get involved with Moms Meet.
You never know what you will come across to try!

I'm a No-Bake Cookie Snob

Yes, I am a No-Bake Cookie snob, at least according to my husband.
He loves them and he jokes that they are just "too beneath me to make".
Yes, I do aspire to try more difficult, elaborate cookies while I channel my Inner Martha.  But today I thought we would give him a treat.

I used the recipe for No-Bake Cookies from Justapinch.com which is a GREAT recipe site, if you haven't already joined them!
Jesse and I made them together and that also made it fun.  I let him pour in the ingredients. I took care of stirring while boiling on the stove and then let him mix in the final ingredients on the counter.  He is old enough and done this enough to know not to touch a hot pan.  Then he used the cookie scoop and dropped them onto the wax paper.
The jury is still out if these would make to a Christmas Cookie party platter by me, but since my hubby loves them, it was time to indulge him..after all, I am embarrassed to say, this is the first time I have made them for him in the 7 years {almost in 2 weeks} we have been married.
Actually, this may be the first time I have actually made them at all.
I grew up baking but my mom tends to make the more difficult recipes, too.
Like mother, like daughter. :)
He should be home soon for the approving nod but I think they are pretty tasty...for No-Bakes. ;)

What is your favorite cookie recipe?

Have Breakfast with Lightning McQueen? Yes, please.

Genius in Marketing.
Grandmas can't resist it!  ;)
And with McQueen's face plastered on it, they were gobbled up fast!
Similar to Frosted Cheerios.  Tasty enough. He ate it dry, as he usually does.  So I don't know if it was messy when soaked in milk.

You know our house is looking forward to the release of Cars 2 on June 24th!
Jesse and Cars2 display at Epcot from the Flower Festival
We might even splurge on the 3-D or IMAX.  We'll see how much "paper, stamps & ink" I sell between now and then.  ;)
And I know we could say it is all for Jesse, but the truth is John & I are looking forward to it as much {or more} than he is!  Shhh...our little secret!
What movie are you looking forward to this summer?

Jesse's 3rd Birthday and our first character lunch

We love Disney but opted to wait until Jesse was old enough to really care and be excited.  Even in this video, I think he was still trying to absorb it all.  It was definitely sensory overload once the characters and singers came out.
Menu according to wdw info:Selection of Salads: Orange & watercress salad, Caesar salad, Tomato & Buffalo Mozzarella salad with Basil oil, Mixed seasonal greens, and tuna salad. Selection of Appetizers: Carved ham, turkey and salami, assorted cheeses, and fresh seasonal fruit. Entree Selections: Seafood pasta alfredo, Baked chicken thighs with Pinot Noir and blackberry, Chicken Satay and peanut sauce, and Grilled polenta with sun dried tomatoes. Selection of accompaniments: Garlic mashed potatoes, Bean cassoulet, Sauteed green beans, Creamed corn spoon bread, and Rice & whole grain medley. Handcrafted desserts and pasties from the bakery: apple cobbler, berry cobbler, Snicker cheesecake, Carrot cake, Mascarpone, and Chocolate Mousse cake.
We made our reservations at 11:00 am, right when it opened for lunch.  That gave us a bit of time to get acclimated and eat a bit.  When the characters and singers start, you pretty much lose the littles.
The food was great quality and more gourmet than I expected for a buffet.  They kept everything filled quickly and we definitely didn't leave wanting for anything.  They even gave us a drink to go.  ;)
FYI: They charge for 3 & up.  And we never spend this much for a meal but it was special and well worth it for his 3rd Birthday!  I wouldn't go too often, though, the sparkle would lose it's shine.

Handy Manny & Leo from Little Einsteins with Jesse & Abigale

Jesse & June, from Little Einsteins

June & Abigale.  She wasn't scared but curious.

Me, Special Agent Oso, and Jesse.  It was Oso's first week as a character at this breakfast!
 Dance Time!
Video collage from the Dance Time!
Birthday Cupcake that also came with a birthday card that all the characters signed. :)
 YUM!
 Pure Fun!
Daddy, Jesse, Mommy, & Abigale after our lovely character lunch.
We were in Hollywood Studios after all so we went and said Hello to Mickey again.  He is an unmentioned character greeting in The Art of Disney.  Quickest way to meet him within all 4 parks!

 Our Family November 8, 2010
He must have grown a ton since then because he looks very small here to me.  He got to be the Honorary Train Conductor and got to shout into the microphone "ALL Aboard".  Huge highlight.  The video is basically dark so I didn't post it. :(
Thanks for reading, looking, & watching.  Have you went and what did you think?
And when are Jake and the Neverland Pirates coming for character greetings or this lunch!?

{And I realize this post is a little late but I just discovered an application on my computer where I can merge videos.  I can also edit them, as in flip them right side up when I film them the wrong way in error.  IMovie.  Today I am loving my MAC. :) }

The Gift of Coffee Brewed for You with Love

I had a lovely night with friends last night!  Jennifer had a bunch of us over to play bunco and enjoy {Birthday} Chocolate Fondue.  Just lovely and with some of the funnest {is that a word?} gals a girl could know!  {Be sure to check out Jennifer's new digs at family musings... very pretty!}
But I got home at midnight and, well, I am now old, apparently.
My darling husband pre-set the coffee pot and I awoke to a kiss from Jesse and the wonderful aroma of freshly brewed Chocolate Truffle Coffee from Folgers.
Paired with the Dark Chocolate Breve` Cream DIVINE!
 Seriously, please try this combo.
So much more than "just" coffee..together they elevate each other to something so much more rich and enjoyable.
Separately, good.  Together, over-the-top fantastic!
That can describe married life sometimes, too..  ;)

{No one gave me anything for this "review".  I just found the combo inspiring and I thought I would share.  I would love free coffee and/or creamer, though so feel free to contact me for something like that!  ;) }

Grilled Roasted Vegetable and Dubliner Cheese sandwich

Just a quick food combo I did from previous posts.
I combined The Dubliner Cheese with leftover Roasted Vegetables sliced thin and grilled it like a grilled cheese.
Unbelievable.
Try it!

Dubliner Cheese

Meant to get this up for St. Patrick's Day but there is always a good time to celebrate cheese!
From the KerryGold website:
"Quite daringly different, Dubliner is a specialty cheese with a distinctive mature rounded flavour and a natural hint of sweetness"
I would say the texture defintely has the flakiness & saltiness of Parmesan, too.  In fact they suggest using it in place of parm.  But there is a butteriness to this cheese as well.  When you taste it, you just know the work that went into making it "just right".
It is not a cheese I could eat a lot at one time because it is so robust but a cheese I would reserve for small tastings.  I bet it would be great with a lovely pear or a bunch of grapes.
Mom & I enjoyed it with some sublime olives and such we bought at an olive bar, crackers and few other cheeses.  We filled up on these appetizers and didn't make it to lunch.
This large block was purchased at Sam's and would be perfect to set out for a dinner party.
What is your favorite cheese?

I got my box!

It has arrived!

I was chosen to be a host for the PHILLY Dinnertime Dilemma House Party!  I am so excited because I have tried out for many parties.
I got my box of supplies for the party today!
Can't wait to decide what I am going to do to create the party favor bag for those that attend!

So excited about this skillet from Green Pan!  This is the gift to the hostess for having the party.
A metal handle means I can sear on top and put directly into the oven to finish!  Yes!

Now I am on the hunt for a Buy One Get One Sale so I can make more dishes to sample at the party.  They give you 4 coupons but I also sent out many invites and invited the whole family.

Look for more updates as the party nears!  Wahoo!
